Dr St George Ashe, Bishop of Clogher

Born:
1658
Died:
1718

Swift's lifelong friend and former tutor in mathematics at Trinity College, Dublin. Founded the Dublin Philosophical Society with William Molyneux in 1683. Appointed Bishop of Clogher in February 1696 and Bishop of Derry in June 1717.
Despite Ashe's Whig sympathies, the two remained friends. Swift writes in January 1711 of extracting a promise from Harley that 'the bishop of Clogher shall not be removed' from the Irish privy council.

Ashe was also an acquaintance of Addison and Esther Johnson, and is the priest alleged, in John Evans's account, to have officiated at Swift and Stella's secret "wedding" in 1716.
