Bishop John Stearne [or Sterne]

Born:
1660
Died:
1745

Swift’s predecessor as Chancellor, and later Dean, of St Patrick’s Cathedral (1702-1712). Appointed Bishop of Dromore in 1713, and succeeded St George Ashe as Bishop of Clogher from 1717. Sterne was an alumnus of Trinity College, Dublin, and returned to the university as Vice-Chancellor in 1721. Stearne was an intimate of both Swift and Stella, and owed his advancement to a bishopric largely to Swift’s exertions on his behalf with Bolingbroke and Ormond. He published a manual for clergymen titled Tractatus de visitatione infirmorum (1697).
